Education Under Fire (Educational)

As part of the severe Iranian government-directed discriminations and abuses up to and including executions against the Baha'i community (the largest non-Muslim minority), Iran has also denied higher education opportunities to them. The Wake Forest Baha'i Association, with the support of the Wake Forest Amnesty International Club, is hosting an open thirty minute Education Under Fire DVD video presentation with three Iranian students who survived will be available for questions after the presentation. Admission if free.

Join us at the Piedmont Buddy Walk and Family Fun Day on Oct. 27th. Sarah and JJ from the Dash Pack will MC the event. Entertainment includes: Captain Jim magic shows; local band performances; inflatables; games; a talent show; food; and more! The optional Fun Walk is for everyone of all ages and abilities. Walk day events will take place rain or shine. This event is hosted by the Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network (PDSSN).The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to promote acceptance and inclusion of all people with Down syndrome. Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does, or just want to show your support, join us for a great day and a fun time for everyone!

On October 27, The Coffee Mill in Lewisville will hold Fall Art Fest from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Over 35 members of local arts and craft guilds will be on hand to exhibit and sell their work. Families can rock on the porch of the old roller mill, enjoy a smoothie or fresh-baked treat, and select gifts for special celebrations. Along with arts and crafts, customers can have pet and family portraits taken by one of the guild members. There will also be food for lunch and live music. Admission is free.

Bark for Life (Fund Raising Event)

Bark for Life is a noncompetitive dog walk which raises funds for the American Cancer Society. The event begins with a blessing of the animals, then a walk through Miller Park. There are lots of fun contests, especially the costume contest and owner/dog look-a-like.

Exhibition "The Vocabulary of Printmaking: Its Origins & Techniques" (Art Installation)

Celebrating the rich tradition of fine art printmaking in its many forms, 5 artists highlight an exceptional array of printmaking techniques. Originally used as a form of communication, printmaking is now valued as an artistic medium with unique qualities. John D. Gall (Jamestown) tells stories with his art, incorporating figures, symbols, & scientific data in surreal ways. Robert Dunning (UNC- Asheville) blends abstract biomorphic forms with figurative imagery using collage, printmaking, drawing, & painting. Julie Niskanen (Raleigh) focuses on the beauty of forms found in nature. David Faber (Wake Forest University) practices printmaking techniques including intaglio, lithography, relief, monotype, & mixed media. "The President is Coming!" U.S. Presidential Visits to Greensboro (Exhibit)

What do Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt and Bill Clinton all have in common? A new display at the Greensboro Historical Museum illustrates that there have been at least eighteen U.S. President's who have stopped in the Gate City. Come visit the lobby display, our preview to the full display that will be on view on August 23, 2012. As always, all exhibitions at the museum are free for visitors.

Dias de los Muertos (Days of the Dead) (Exhibit)

Location: Museum of Anthropology, Wake Forest University

MOA’s annual exhibit features a traditional Mexican ofrenda: a home altar with sugar skulls, colorful tissue paper cutouts, food and beverage offerings, marigolds, and photos of deceased relatives to honor the dead. A children’s ofrenda and photographs illustrating different aspects of the celebration are also on display. This exhibit features text in English and Spanish. Admission is free. Open Tuesday to Saturday.

Weaving along the Silk Road: Amazing Asian Saddle Rugs (Exhibit)

This new long-term exhibit examines the creation, function, and cultural importance of saddle rugs across Central Asia. It features colorfully woven horse covers and saddle covers, as well as elaborately decorated saddles from an area spanning the ancient Silk Road from China to Constantinople (Istanbul). Open Tuesday to Saturday.

Free Tennis Lessons for Kids (Community Event)

The Kimiberly Park Tennis Club offers free tennis lessons to kids ages 5 to 18. Practices are held at the Parkland High School tennis courts each Saturday at 3pm This is a year long program and winter practices are held at the Wake Forest University Indoor Tennis Center.
